Napping Gets Respect
Do you take regular naps?
If not you are missing out on the restorative and anti-aging powers of daytime rest. Many are hesitant to nap because they feel napping takes away from getting other things done. Some feel ashamed or embarrassed to nap. After all our parents were hard workers and they never napped. Right?
How naps help ~
Studies show that a 60-90 minute nap can reward you with the same refreshment and ability to learn as 8 hours of night-time sleep. Naps also enhance libido, elevate mood and aid in weight loss.
Animals and napping ~
All animals, obviously ourselves included, are multiphasic sleepers. This means we are hardwired to sleep in several phases- one long night-time stretch and a shorter period around midday. Take a look at your pets to see this in action.
History of napping ~
Throughout history working during the mid-day hours was considered taboo. Christian, Hebrew, Arabic and Slavic cultures all believed that mischievous spirits were about during the mid-day hours waiting to cause mayhem to any who weren't napping. They associated the non-napper with the mentally disturbed.
The word ''siesta comes from the Roman 'sexta' which means the 6th hour or noontime. The whole city automatically slept at that time. The word nap'' comes from the Old English 'knappian' which means 'to dose'.
Napping started to lose its importance during the 13-15th centuries when the clock replaces the sundial. Workers then were paid by the hour and not, as previously, by the job. We all know the phrase time is money.
Great nappers ~
DaVinci, Einstein, Newton, Churchill ,President Kennedy and my wise son Gino- all dedicated nappers. NASA, British Airways and Amtrak are all instituting napping into their wellness programs.
I encourage and challenge you to commit to a 5-30 minute nap every day for 7 days. You'll see the difference.
All my best wishes,
Joy Pacitto
